Five offline RPGs worth your storage space

Offline RPGs are a special breed. When a game promises dozens of hours but demands a constant connection, it's useless on the one trip where you'd actually have time to play it. So we went looking for the ones that respect airplane mode.

Turn-based combat tends to survive offline best, since it doesn't rely on live servers. Emberfall Saga is our current favorite — the timing-based attacks keep fights lively, and the skill tree gives you real choices. We finished twenty hours on a SIM-less phone without a single hiccup.

When you're picking an RPG for offline play, check the save system before you commit. Some games technically launch offline but silently need a connection to save your progress. The good ones store everything locally and checkpoint often.

Storage matters too. A big RPG can eat a couple of gigabytes, so clear some room before a long trip. It's worth it — nothing beats sinking into a proper story campaign when there's nothing but empty landscape out the window.
